The Friends of Sam Rayburn

Then Sam Rayburn House Curator John Jameson worked with interested individuals from the Fourth Congressional District to form the Friends of Sam Rayburn in 1977.  In 2003 the non-profit organization expanded the scope of its mission to include support for the Sam Rayburn Library and Museum as well as the Sam Rayburn House Museum.  If you'd like to become a member and help us in our quest to support the legacy of Mr. Sam, a membership form is located here.

In honor of Mr. Sam....

A rose was named for Mr. Sam.  No longer in production, it was introduced in the fall of 1962 and was named "Speaker Sam".  A copy of the Arp Nursery brochure that announced the rose can be viewed here.

A nuclear submarine was named in Mr. Sam's honor.  It was commissioned the USS Sam Rayburn on December 2, 1964.  Additional information on the submarine can be found here.

A four cent stamp was named in Mr. Sam's honor.  It was issued on September 16, 1962 at Bonham, Texas.  We hope to have copies of some of the first day covers on our site soon.

A lake in east Texas is named after Mr. Sam.  It is located on the Angelina River. The dam is located in Jasper County approximately 15 miles north of Jasper.  There are many websites with additional information on the lake, including the one you can reach by clicking here.

The Sam Rayburn House Office Building, named in Mr. Sam's honor, was completed in 1965. The design was intended to be simple and classical, harmonizing with other Capitol Hill edifices. The building's design is a modified H plan. Above a pink granite base, a white marble facade covers a concrete and steel frame. To each side of the main entrance are ten-foot marble statues -- Spirit of Justice and Majesty of Law. Upon the east and west walls are eight marble rhytons drinking horns.  Additional information on the building can be found here.

The Sam Rayburn Memorial VA Center in Bonham, Texas is named after Mr. Sam.  Additional information on the Center can be found here.

A white oak tree (Quercus alba Linnaeus) was planted in Mr. Sam's honor on the grounds of the U. S. Capitol on October 11, 1949.  We have been unable to get a recent picture of the tree, as construction work is being done in the area.  Below is a picture we believe was taken in the late 1950's.  There is a cloth "tape" on display at the Sam Rayburn House Museum that was used to measure the tree in the 1950's as well.

Three presidents, a soon-to-be president (Lyndon Johnson), and many, many members of Congress and additional dignitaries attended Mr. Sam's funeral in 1961.  Below is a famous picture that was taken in the First Baptist  Church in Bonham during Mr. Sam's funeral, showing Presidents Kennedy, Eisenhower & Truman and Vice President Johnson.
